Writing for Him

Lettie Kirkpatrick Whisman

New book

If the trails could talk
If the woods could speak
If the mountains could bring forth the glad tidings that
John Muir welcomed…
We would have stories pour forth and they would tell
of laughter and tears and joy and friendship.
They would speak of lost boys and weddings, of courage, strength, healing, and incredible adventures… of breathtaking beauty and God encounters thatchanged lives.
Let the stories speak

About Lettie

In 1995 I completed the Christian Leaders and Speakers Seminar (C.L.A.S.S.) developed by Florence Littaur and in 2016 completed Speakers training through a class at the Cove. I have taught classes for writers at Lifeway Christian Resources, Chattanooga Bible Institute, and Cleveland State College, as well as leading workshops at the Southern Christian Writers Conference (SCWC), Kentucky Christian Writers Conference, and the Southeastern Christian Writers Conference. Several published articles have won awards at the Lifeway Writers Workshops and the SCWC.

A little personal background – I am the mother of four sons. Our only daughter, Shela, died in July, 1993, at age 19 following a lifelong battle against a muscle disease. Tom Kirkpatrick, my husband of 29 years, died of cancer November 1, 2000. In August, 2003 I remarried a widower, Phillip Burress. Phil had a massive stroke in June, 2012 and I was his caregiver until his death in April, 2017. (My book Extravagant Grace for Extraordinary Grief :Devotions from the Refiner’s Fire was formed in those years). I later remarried Jim Whisman a widower and we make our primary home on his goat farm in Hixson, TN. Together, we have 7 children and a dozen grandchildren.

24 Things About Me

I have a little girl somewhere in me, waiting to be set free.

Living “in the moment” is a struggle for me.

My perfect day would include a long hike with a “buddy”, reading time, and a sandwich at Schlotsky’s, eaten outside. And maybe some chocolate!

I have a mental “to do” list if God ever decides to let me be “God for a day”.

I am a fiercely loyal friend.

Cleaning my tile shower brings out the worst in me.

Aging doesn’t bother me much (senior discounts will help) – I’m all about eternity.

My sons stole my identity (always someone’s mom), but they make me proud.

If you see me, I’m wearing either resale or Goodwill, count on it.

This year I’m working on two character issues: Being content and overcoming grumbling and complaining.

I believe I’ll go to my grave without discovering my “perfect” hairstyle.

My trademark? Matching earrings. Clip-ons.

My passions? Writing, teaching, prayer, discipling women.

My joys? My exceptional husband, my precious grandchildren, family, the mountains, friendships.

My fears? Loss, failing someone who needs me, dying without living.

My weaknesses? Introspective to a fault, super-slow decision maker.

My greatest gift? God’s amazing, redeeming grace —I’ve never gotten over it.

My dreams? To complete section hikes on the Applachian Trail, hike in New Zealand, travel and speak/teach in certain places.

My newest book.

My heart book is still in progress — you’ll have to ask.

If I ever look like I have it all together — it’s a mirage!

I take life far too seriously, but I love to laugh.

I love to dance!

I’m glad this is over, writing about myself seems pretty pointless (all these I’s), but it’s actually been kind of fun.

Personal Reviews

“I took Lettie’s Christian Writers’ class and it was excellent. Very informative and well worth the money. She connects. I learned more practical, usable information in two sessions than I did in multiple sessions in a university setting. I highly recommend it.”

Marcia Swearingen

Freelance Writer

“Lettie Kirkpatrick eagerly offers encouragement to both published and non-published writers. In her workshops, she offers practical advice along with handouts that you will use again and again.”

Nancy Simmons Vineyard

Author and Freelance Writer

“At a recent teacher training conference I attended it was said that Lettie Kirkpatrick was as close to being a Master teacher as one could possibly be this side of glory.”

Wendy Brown

Former Missionary

“In each trial Lettie has faced, she has chosen to lean into the goodness and sovereignty of God, allowing the Lord to teach her deep truths only learned in deep suffering. In her devotionals you’ll read the fruit of the truths she’s learned and be encouraged by God’s goodness and sovereignty in all circumstances.”

“Lettie has not only walked through “the valley of the shadow of death”, she has camped there. Her writing is real, raw, and thought provoking.”

“Lettie is first of all an excellent writer, so she knows how to communicate effectively. Second, she has mastered all aspects of the religious market as well as anyone I know. But finally and most importantly, she knows how to take a new writer through the basic steps and inspire them to greater achievement. Writers love her for her insightful help and her loving spirit. She’s been there and done that, but she never tires of helping others to go there and do that too. What a combination!”

Michael Fink

Retired Director

“Tears. Questions. Lack of answers. Anger. Waiting . . . and the next days remained the same. And the next days . . . for nearly five years. But through it all, Lettie leaned on God and trusted Him through the suffering.”
